The David Lanz Contest

Return to the Heart by David Lanz

I decided to enter into a song competition, in which I was to play one of David Lanz’ songs and record a video for youtube.

He will be choosing a certain number of winners each getting various prizes (ranging from songbooks, CDs, to a one on one session with him).

This is my submission, one of my favorite pieces by him.  Rather simplistic, but incredibly beautiful.  I hope you enjoy it.

Feel free to click on my YOUTUBE name when you get to that page (or visit the links section of this site) as it has other songs I have posted on YouTube….and trust me there will be ALOT more to come!

Take care,
Jon

Hey everyone.

It’s been a bit since anything’s gone on, so I figured I’d throw an update here and let everyone know what’s going on.

Basically- I’ve kind of been M.I.A. for a bit due to some unfortunate luck.  I happened to total 2 cars over Nov and Dec. (one old, one a new one I got to replace the old one heh).  I came out fine with no injuries from both, so I’m quite lucky.  But, having no means of transportation severly cut into my ability to get out and play.  With that and money issues being on my mind over the past 2-3 months, I sort of halted really getting out there to do anything.

However - that’s changing now :)

I’m undertaking a new project.  Basically - as I’ve mentioned here and there, I’ve played a game called World of Warcraft over the past 3.5 years on and off.  In that time I wrote some pretty goofy songs about the game and topics that revolve around it.  Well people have heard them, like them, and time and again have requested I actually do a CD of all of this music.  For over 3 years I’ve put it off.  It’s time I cut the procrastination.

I have a good buddy who’s going to help me record stuff using his equipment…and if all goes well the end result will be a 10+ digital CD of these songs.  In the meantime however - I will be getting some videos on YOUTUBE of both my newer originals (that aren’t recorded at all yet and have only been performed live) as well as some of these “WoW related” songs.  Hopefully that’ll hold people over!

Also, I’m in the works of trying to get some regular piano lounge gigs in and around Boston.  Background music in a bar type things.  Hopefully those pan out and I’ll be out playing more regularly.

Oh - and I’m up to about 3 weeks having my lastest “new” car and no accidents…lets hope the streak continues :P

Take it easy everyone,

Jon

 Piano in room first day

Well, the day finally came.

This past saturday, I had the piano I purchased about a month and a half ago moved to the new place.  I had to postpone the move a few weeks so that some work around the house could be completed prior to its arrival…but it was well worth it.

The movers arrived in Canton at around 9:15 AM.  The piano was disassembled, driven to Dorchester, craned to the 2nd floor, and reassembled by 10:45AM  That’s pretty incredible if you ask me (efficient movers…I suggest anyone moving a piano around Boston contact “Deathwish Piano Movers”)

After they got it set up, I sat down and didn’t stop playing until well into the night.  My roomate and I redid the entire room into a music haven…a drum set, amps, guitars on the wall soon.  By far my favorite room in the house.

The piano is a Kawai RX-2, 5′10 Grand

Having something you dream about getting happen, at such an early age compared to most musicians I’ve spoken with, its incredible.  I couldn’t have done it without the unwavering help and support of my parents.  No number of “thank yous” can suffice.  It took a few days to settle in.  I walked in from work yesterday afternoon, having almost forgotten I had that thing sitting across the room…and I was floored.

If anyone ever wants to hear it, just give me a shout and I’ll give you a concert :)

I didn’t think this day would really come.  Nevermind this soon.

It was something I always talked about.  One of those things that would come up in conversation or in passing where my answer would be “Yeah, someday I’ll get one, when I have a home of my own or something.”

The timing seemed to good to be true.  Sitting around a poker table with friends and my soon to be Roomates come the end of June, I look over to this large vacant “mini living room” and make a passing comment: “Wow, a piano would really go great there.” To my surprise I look up to see my friend Will (who owns the place I’m moving to) reply by saying “That’d be fine with me.”  After long discussions and making sure with the guys that it would “OK to have such a beast in the house”, I actually started looking around for one.

So in my second day of really looking (having visited a few piano stores the day prior), I happen to search on Craigslist and within minutes, come across an amazing piano that seemed too good to be true.  The same brand on which I was taught how to play the style of music I now write, a Kawai.  Not only that, but for such a great price I was certain soemthing was wrong with it.

I couldn’t have been more incorrect.  I contacted the owner’s, who invited me to their home the next day to try it out.  After playing it I fell in love, and then today, after playing it again after it was just tuned, I could barely sign a purchase agreement fast enough.

For those curious, it is a 1996 K.Kawai RX-2  5′10 Grand Piano.

I’ll cherish this thing for the rest of my life.  For over 6 years now, I’ve relied on a digital piano.  Anytime I’ve ever sat at an acoustic piano, something always felt “weird”…like I had to relearn the instrument since I was so used to plastic keys and a tiny little sustain pedal.  But now, I’ll be able to experience what I’ve always wanted, an acoustic piano of my own that I can play whenever I want.

Now all I need to do is wait until the end of June when I move to my new place to have it with me!

A big thank you to my future roomates, to the owner’s who were so kind and genuinely wanted me to have it, and to my parents and brother who felt this is something I’ve deserved for a long time.  I feel unbelivably lucky to be able to have such a “dream” actually come true sooner that I ever thought it would.
